For more than 150 years, cast iron has been the default material for manhole covers, gully grates and access covers. But fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites now outperform cast iron on nearly every measurable metric. Weight & Handling

A standard D400 cast iron cover weighs 50–70 kg. The same cover in FRP composite weighs 18–25 kg — up to three times lighter. This single difference reduces shipping costs, eliminates the need for two-person handling, and dramatically cuts the risk of installation injuries.

Corrosion & Lifespan

Cast iron oxidizes. Even with protective coatings, exposure to road salt, urine, sewage gases and industrial chemicals causes pitting within 5–10 years. Composite is chemically inert — it does not rust, rot, or react with the environment.
